Upcoming Food Gardening and Preserving Workshops in Strathcona

If you're thinking about planting garlic this season, or if you want to learn how to put the latest garlic and tomato harvests to use by making pasta sauce, you’ll want to check out a couple of upcoming events hosted by Victory Gardens. Victory Gardens is a group of local women who bill themselves as “a team of urban farmers for hire.” They can help you design a garden for a small or large space, and will even garden-sit for you while you’re away.

They also want to make sure you know what to do with your garden’s bounty once it starts to produce.

To that end, they are hosting the following upcoming workshops.

Saturday, September 15, 10 - 11 a.m.: Growing Garlic - What, When, and How

It costs $17 to participate in this workshop, in which you will learn all about how to grow and store garlic. Topics to be covered include preparing soil, choosing the best garlic varieties for the local climate, how and when to harvest, and the best ways to store your garlic (including garlic braids). The workshop fee includes an information package and garlic seed. This workshop is hosted at the School of Chalk at the corner of East Georgia and Princess Ave. You can register here.

Monday, September 24, 6:30 - 8 p.m.: Grow and Preserve Your Own Pasta Sauce

This workshop is a partnership between Victory Gardens and Sugo Sauce, a Vancouver-based pasta sauce company run by a local woman using her Italian grandmother’s recipes. Victory Gardens will provide a lecture explaining how to grow all of the sauce ingredients, and Sugo Sauce will explain and demonstrate how to make the sauce and preserve it for later use. The workshop fee includes a pasta sample and a jar of Sugo Sauce to take home. This workshop is hosted by Harvest Community Foods at 243 Union Street. You can register here.

Once you know how to grow and store garlic, grow tomatoes and other sauce ingredients, and make and preserve your own sauce, you’ll be well equipped to start your own sauce pantry so you’ll never need to buy packaged pasta sauce again. The homemade stuff tastes great, is so much better for you, and you’ll experience a moment of pride every time you pull a jar of homemade sauce out of the cupboard. If you get really into sauce-making, homemade sauce makes great holiday gifts, too!
